How to accurately represent scientific research

Being a scientist has its challenges, and communicating research responsibly is often even harder. A new study1 from Michigan State University explores the communication strategies environmental health scientists can use to navigate these complexities and avoid misunderstandings.

“Words matter, and misleading information is everywhere,” the researchers say. “As scientists, we need to be more intentional and sophisticated about the messages we send.”

The study examined four ways to present information about endocrine-disrupting chemicals, which interfere with hormones and affect areas like sexual development, neurodevelopment, and obesity. The strategies tested included: 1) emphasizing risks to masculinity, 2) using terms like “neurodivergence,” 3) linking early-life exposures to obesity and disease, and 4) defining obesity as a disease.

Each approach came with potential pitfalls. For instance, classifying obesity as a disease could help more people access weight-loss treatments, but it might also add stigma. Alternatively, highlighting how pollutants in pregnancy may contribute to obesity could reduce stigma but could unfairly place the burden on mothers.

The study highlights that even accurate information can have unintended consequences. “Scientists need to balance being informative with avoiding harmful misinterpretations,” the researchers note.

To tackle these challenges, the study suggests several strategies:

  • Recognize the social context in which scientific findings are received.
  • Avoid messages that could cause harm if misunderstood.
  • Foster collaborations between scientists, communication experts, and ethicists.
  • Partner with community groups to build messaging that serves the public better.

These strategies aim to help scientists share their findings in ways that are both accurate and sensitive to social impacts, supporting responsible science communication.
