Integrating Global Standards for Human Knowledge and AI [MBRF Knowledge Summit Special Issue]
This article is part of a Special Issue featuring highlights of the 9th Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) Knowledge Summit and associated 3rd UNESCO World Open Educational Resources (OER) Congress.
From a knowledge management (KM) perspective, one of the most important presentations at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation (MBRF) Knowledge Summit has been Ron Young’s preview of the MBRF Manual for ISO integrated knowledge management, innovation, and AI standards.
MBRF’s integration of the knowledge management, innovation, and AI standards is a world first, and follows MBRF already being the world’s first nonprofit organisation to receive ISO 30401 Knowledge management systems – Requirements certification in 2019, shortly after this standard was published.
The standards leadership of MBRF also supports the call to action recently made by the United Nations (UN) for enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) governance through international standards, coinciding with the adoption of the Global Digital Compact as part of the landmark Pact for the Future. Such standards integration is also supported by new research1, as summarized in a recent RealKM Magazine article.
MBRF has appointed Ron Young as Chief Knowledge and Artificial Intelligence Advisor to develop the integrated management system based on the ISO 30401, ISO 42001, and ISO 56001 standards. He is acknowledged as a leading international expert and thought leader in strategic knowledge and AI management. This includes high-level expert knowledge of ISO standards, with Ron being formally a member of the National Standards Committees BSI KMS/1 (Knowledge Management), BSI IMS/1 Innovation Management, BSI ART/1 Artificial Intelligence, and BSI AMS/1 Asset Management. As a member of these committees, he attends the ISO standards committees ISO 30401:2018, ISO 56001 Innovation Management and ISO 42001 Artificial Intelligence Management Systems.
His Excellency Jamal bin Huwaireb, CEO of MBRF, states that:
The UAE Cabinet, chaired by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, adopted the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031. The MBRF is contributing to this strategy with its mission to bring the best possible methods for creating, transferring, and applying knowledge to individuals, teams, organizations, and knowledge-based societies across the world. We have been working with Ron Young since 2016, and we are delighted to now collaborate on creating integrated knowledge and AI-driven management systems. This will help organizations identify and develop critical and core knowledge assets, both human and digital, that can be enhanced through effective knowledge management and artificial intelligence.
A large number of organizations have so far expressed interest in the MBRF Manual. Further information on MBRF’s standards integration can be found in Ron’s presentation slides.
