72 new emoji added
As if the emoji landscape wasn’t already confusing enough, the Unicode Consortium has announced that a further 72 characters have been added to their list of over 1,600 emoji.
The new additions comprise 7 faces, 7 people, 7 hand gestures, 14 plants/animals, 18 food emoji, 12 sports emoji, and some others.
Design guidelines for improving the interoperability of emoji characters across platforms and implementations can be found in the newly published Unicode Technical Report 51.
A further 8 characters have been accepted as candidates, and later this year a final determination will be made of the emoji characters to be added to Unicode 10.0 which is due for release in June 2017.
