Researcher illegally shares millions of science papers free online to spread knowledge

So much important scientific knowledge remains locked away behind journal paywalls, where it is inaccessible to the general public.

However, ScienceAlert reports that:

A researcher in Russia has made more than 48 million journal articles – almost every single peer-reviewed paper every published – freely available online. And she’s now refusing to shut the site down, despite a court injunction and a lawsuit from Elsevier, one of the world’s biggest publishers.

The site is Sci-Hub.

  1. Good on her. Those publishers lock away knowledge and abuse the need and I think gullibility for academics to get published. Then they charge libraries like wounded buffalos for the the privilege of accessing such journals

    1. Many thanks Karna for your comment, yes she’s taken a great step in challenging the locking away of knowledge that should be accessible to everyone. Locking it away means that the general public can’t learn from it, and that it can’t be subjected to open scrutiny. Open access is vital, and for that reason RealKM only links to research that is openly accessible.

  2. Go open access – information freedom is vital in an educated world. Thanks for sharing Bruce.
